Mountain Region Dove Fields

Sandy Mush Game Land (Non Permit)

From Asheville at the intersection of Patton Avenue (US 19-23) and Leicester Highway (NC 63),  travel west on Leicester Highway 8.1 miles to red light at intersection with Alexander Road (SR 1620).  Travel east on Alexander Road 3.6 miles and turn left on Old # 20 (SR 1622).  Travel 1.7 miles on Old # 20 and keep straight onto Cedar Hill Road (SR 1632).  Continue on Cedar Hill Road to parking areas.  Parking areas are located at intervals of 1.3 miles, 1.6 miles and at road end. All fields are foot accessible from parking areas.  A smaller amount of crop fields can also be accessed from Martin Candler Road (SR 1633) which intersects with Cedar Hill Road.  Martin Candler Road parking is approximately 1.0 mile from intersection with Cedar Hill Road.  Eight crop fields of approximately 25 acres are located in the area.  Wheat crops excellent and mature.  Some fields consisting of mixtures of milo, millet, buckwheat, and sunflowers will mature later in the season.

Mountain Region Dove Fields

Perkins Game Land (Non Permit)

From Mocksville travel US 64 east for approximately 8 miles to NC 801. Turn right on NC 801 and travel 1.3 miles to Riverview Road (SR 1814). Turn left on Riverview Road and travel 0.1 mile to parking area/gate on right or continue 1.7 miles to a parking area at end of the paved road. Follow roads/trails on foot from parking areas to fields. Approximately 18 acres in 4 fields seeded to brown top and proso millet, buckwheat, and corn. Drought has heavily impacted this year’s crops.  The millet and buckwheat crops are only fair but should be mature by the first segment of dove season.  This year’s corn crop is near total failure and little opportunity for good hunting over this crop is expected during the 2nd and 3rd segments of the dove season.

Mountain Region Dove Fields

South Mountains Game Land (Non Permit)

From Morganton travel US 64 south to I-40 intersection. From intersection continue on US 64 approximately 1 mile to Salem Road. Turn left on Salem Road and travel 1 mile to Burkemont Road. Turn left on Burkemont Road and travel 1 mile to Western Avenue. Turn left on Western Avenue and travel 0.25 mile to hunter parking area on right or continue on Western Avenue for 1 mile to second hunter parking area on right. All fields are foot accessible from parking areas. Approximately 20 acres are managed as dove fields.  Approximately 10 acres are planted to millet, grain sorghum, sunflower, and rye grain and will be prepared for hunting during the 1st segment of the season. The remaining 10 acres are planted to grain sorghum and corn and will be ready to hunt during the 2nd and 3rd segments of the season.

Piedmont Region Dove Fields

Butner-Falls Game Land (Non Permit)

Ellerbe Creek (Off Redmill Rd/SR 1632) – From I-85, take Exit 182 Redmill Road north and travel approximately 0.7 miles.  Dove fields are on the left, beyond cable gate, just before Ellerbe Creek. Approximately 18 acres seeded to corn, millet, buckwheat, and top-seeded wheat.

Eno Hole (Off Redmill Rd/SR 1632) – From I-85, take Exit 182 Redmill Road north and travel approximately 2.5 miles. Dove field is on the right beyond cable gate, just before Eno River. Approximately 17 acres seeded to corn, buckwheat, and top-seeded wheat.

Penny Bend (Off Old Oxford Hwy/SR 1004) – From I-85, take Exit 182 Redmill Road north and travel approximately 3.7 miles to stop sign.  Turn left onto Teknika Pkwy. and travel 0.6 miles to stop sign. Turn left onto Old Oxford Hwy. (SR 1004), travel approximately 1.4 miles, and cross over Little River. Dove field is on left immediately after crossing river. Approximately 16 acres seeded to corn buckwheat, millet, and top-seeded wheat.

Redwood Road (SR 1637) – From I-85, take Exit 183 Redwood Road south and travel approximately 1.5 miles. Dove fields are on the left, just after crossing Panther Creek. Approximately 8 acres seeded to corn, millet, and buckwheat.

Hereford Road (SR 1800) – From I-85, take Exit 183 Redwood Road south approximately 1.7 miles and cross over lake.  Turn left onto Hereford Road and travel approximately 0.5 miles.  Gated path on the left leads to dove fields.  Approximately 6 acres seeded to millet, corn, buckwheat, and top-seeded wheat. 

Olive Grove Rd (SR 1903) – From I-85, take Exit 186 Hwy 15 east approximately 0.6 miles and turn right on Will Suitt Rd.  Travel 1.4 miles to intersection of Old Weaver Trail. Cross through the intersection and continue on Boyce Road another 1.3 miles to stop sign. Turn right onto Olive Grove Church Road and travel 1 mile to dead end.  Dove fields are 0.4 miles beyond end of pavement.  Approximately 28 acres seeded to corn, millet, buckwheat, and sunflower.|

Brickhouse Road (SR 1630) – From I-85, take Exit 189 to Butner.  Follow Central Ave. approximately 2 miles through Butner.  Turn right on Veazy Road and travel 1.3 miles to stop sign. Turn left on Old Oxford Hwy (SR 1004) & follow approximately 1.7 miles. Turn left on Brickhouse Road (first road on left after Federal Prison) and continue approximately 2 miles (pavement will turn to gravel).  Several fields are located in this area.  Note that special regulations apply to posted waterfowl impoundments (non-toxic shot only). Approximately 70 acres seeded to corn, millet, sunflower, Egyptian wheat, buckwheat, and top-seeded wheat.  

Indian Trail (Off Old Oxford Hwy/SR 1004) – From I-85, take Exit 189 Butner.  Follow Central Ave. approximately 2 miles through Butner.  Turn right on Veazy Road and travel 1.3 miles to stop sign. Turn left on Old Oxford Hwy (SR 1004) & follow approximately 2 miles. Field is on left, just before Cassam Road.  Entrance is a small parking area. Approximately 8 acres seeded to corn, millet, buckwheat, and top-seeded wheat.

Flat River (Off Old Oxford Hwy/SR 1004) - From I-85, take Exit 189 Butner. Follow Central Ave. approximately 2 miles through Butner. Turn right on Veazy Road and travel 1.3 miles to stop sign.  Turn left on Old Oxford Hwy (SR 1004) & follow approximately 2.1 miles. Dove fields are just beyond the Flat River at the power line crossing and located on both sides of Old Oxford Hwy. Approximately 35 acres seeded to corn, millet, Egyptian wheat, buckwheat, and top-seeded wheat. 

Knapp of Reeds (Off Old Oxford Hwy/SR 1004) – From I-85, take Exit 189 to Butner.  Follow Central Ave. approximately 2 miles through Butner.  Turn right onto Veazy Road and travel 1.3 miles to stop sign.  Turn left onto Old Oxford Hwy. (SR 1004) and follow approximately 1 mile.  Dove field is just beyond the Knapp of Reeds Waterfowl Impoundment Parking Lot on the left (directly across from the Federal Prison).  Approximately 7 acres seeded to corn, millet, sunflowers, and buckwheat.

Piedmont Region Dove Fields

Jordan Game Land (Non Permit)

Stagecoach Road (SR 1107) – From I-40, take Exit 274 Hwy 751 south approximately 1.1 miles.  Turn right on Stagecoach Road and travel approximately 0.1 miles to first cabled path on the right.  Dove field is 400 yards beyond cable.  Approximately 4 acres seeded to corn, millet, milo, and buckwheat.

Hwy 751 – From I-40, take Exit 274 Hwy 751 south approximately 6 miles to gravel parking area on right before crossing lake.  Dove fields are several hundred yards behind cable gate.  Approximately 22 acres seeded to corn, millet, milo, sunflower, buckwheat, and Egyptian wheat.

Martha’s Chapel Road (SR 1752) – From Hwy 64 at Wilsonville, take Farrington Road (SR 1008) north approximately 4 miles.  At lake causeway, turn right on Martha’s Chapel Road.  Dove field is approximately 0.25 mile on right.  Approximately 4 acres seeded to corn, millet, milo, and buckwheat.

Sexton Road (SR 1748) – From Hwy 64 at Wilsonville, take Farrington Road (SR 1008) north approximately 2.3 miles.  Turn left onto Sexton Road and continue on graveled road to parking area.  Dove fields are 200 yards beyond cable gate.  Approximately 7 acres seeded to corn, millet, milo, and buckwheat. 

Tody Goodwin Road (SR 1900) – From Wilsonville, take Hwy 64 East approximately 3 miles.  At Hwy 751 intersection, turn right onto New Hill – Olive Chapel Road (SR 1141/Hwy 751 Extension) and travel approximately 1.3 miles.  Turn right onto Tody Goodwin Road (SR 1900) and continue approximately 0.25 miles.  Parking area on the left.  Dove fields are behind cable gate.  Approximately 8 acres seeded to corn, millet, milo, and buckwheat.

Big Woods Road (SR 1716) – From Wilsonville, take Hwy 64 West approximately 3 miles across lake.  Turn right on Big Woods Road (SR 1716) and continue north approximately 5 miles.  Turn right into the WRC Public Fishing Access Area.  Dove fields are immediately on the left beyond metal gate.  Approximately 8 acres seeded to corn, millet, milo, and buckwheat.

Caswell Game Land (Non Permit)

Mary Jane Bigelow (SR 1730) – From Yanceyville, take Hwy 62 south approximately 3 miles.  Turn left on Burton Chapel Road (SR 1736).  Continue approximately 3 miles.  Turn left on Mary Jane Bigelow Road (SR 1730) and continue 1.3 miles.  Turn right on gravel road along edge of large hay field and follow 0.5 miles to parking area.  Approximately 17 acres seeded to buckwheat, corn, millet, and sunflower.

Frogsboro (SR 1710) – From Yanceyville, take Hwy 86 south approximately 5 miles.  Turn left and travel north on Hwy 119 for approximately 1 mile.  Turn right on Grier’s Church Road (SR 1710).  Travel approximately 0.5 mile and turn right on graveled game land road across from the church.  Approximately 15 acres in three fields seeded to buckwheat, corn, millet,  sunflower, and wheat.

Scott Tract (SR 1600) – From Yanceyville, take Hwy 86/158 south approximately 2 miles to their split and then take Hwy 158 east approximately 1 mile.  Turn left on Brown Road (SR 1600) and travel approximately 1 mile.  Turn left on graveled game land road and continue approximately 1 mile to gates.  Dove area is approximately 100 yards behind gate on right.  Approximately 30 acres seeded to buckwheat, corn, millet, sunflower, and wheat.

Old 62 (SR 1156) – From Yanceyville, take Hwy 62 south approximately 1 mile.  Turn right on Harrelson Road (SR 1746).  Travel approximately 2 miles to stop sign and turn left on Badgett Sisters Parkway (SR 1156).  Continue approximately 1 mile to fields on both sides of road.  Approximately 24 acres seeded to buckwheat, corn, millet, sunflower, and wheat.

Barker Tract (Hwy 62 South) – From Yanceyville, take Hwy 62 south approximately 0.3 miles to gravel road on left and follow for approximately 0.7 miles to gated parking area.  Approximately 45 acres seeded to buckwheat, corn, millet, and sunflower.

Old Bigelow (SR 1778) – From Yanceyville, take Hwy 62 south approximately 3 miles and turn left on Burton Chapel Road (SR 1736).  Continue approximately 2.25 miles, turn left onto Old Bigelow Road and follow approximately 0.5 miles.  Fields are located on the left in the sharp bend of the road.  Approximately 8 acres seeded to corn and sunflower.

Pee Dee River Game Land (Non Permit)

The Diggs tract on Pee Dee River Game Land in southern Richmond County has a dove field that is back in rotation as of this year.  Approximately five acres were planted to browntop millet, with approximately three acres top-sowed to wheat.  Future plantings should total about the same acreage.  Not a permit area. Access to game land is off of Old Cheraw Highway.

Sandhills Game Land (Non Permit)

Field 1 (Parsons Tract) – From Hoffman, travel northwest on SR 1003 (Derby Rd.) approximately 8 miles.  Game land tract located on left.  Approximately 30 acres seeded to annual mix of sunflower/sorghum/millet, corn, milo, and wheat.

Field 2 (Horse Creek Tract) – From Pinebluff, travel south on US 1 approximately 2 miles.  Turn right on SR 1102.  Continue approximately 0.25 miles, turn right on gravel road and follow signs to game lands and dove fields.  Approximately 5 acres seeded to annual mixture of sorghum/millet, rye, and corn.

Field 3 (Steele Place) - Field Trial Area; Special Regulations Apply) – From Hoffman, travel northwest on SR 1003 (Derby Rd.) approximately 3 miles.  Turn left on Field Trial Area & follow signs to dove fields.  Approximately 4 acres seeded to corn, milo, and millet.

Field 4 (Barn) - Field Trial Area; Special Regulations Apply) – From Hoffman, travel northwest on SR 1003 (Derby Rd.) approximately 4 miles.  Turn left on Field Trial Area & follow signs to dove fields.  Approximately 4 acres seeded to corn.

Field 5 (Old Heat 5) - Field Trial Area; Special Regulations Apply) – From Hoffman, travel west on SR 1475 approximately 4 miles.  Turn right on SR 1487 and continue approx 4 miles.  Turn left onto Field Trial Area and follow signs to dove fields.  Approximately 4 acres seeded to corn.

Field 6 (Thrower Fields) – From Hoffman, travel approximately 4 miles on SR 1475.  Turn right on SR 1487.  Continue approximately 0.5 miles to game land road on right to access field.  Approximately 4 acres seeded to rye and wheat.

Field 7 (Herssau Sawmill) - From Hoffman, travel approximately 4 miles west on SR 1475.  Turn right on SR 1487.  Continue approximately 4 miles to first intersection.  Turn left, travel 75 yards and turn left again onto a wooded road.  Follow signs to dove field.  Approximately 4 acres seeded to corn and rye. 

Field 8 (Block C)  – From Hoffman, travel approximately 5 miles south on US Hwy 1.  Turn left onto Hwy 177 and continue south approximately 1.6 miles.  Turn left on SR 1605 (Cognac Rd.) at the Unimin Sand Plant.  Continue approximately 4 miles on SR 1605 to the second 4-way intersection.   Turn right, travel 400 yards, and turn right again to access several fields.  Follow signs to other dove fields.  Approximately 4 acres seeded to millet, buckwheat, and corn. 

Field 9 (Upchurch Tract) - From Raeford, take Hwy 401 East approximately 1.5 miles out of town.  Turn left onto SR 1302 (Doc Brown Rd.). Travel SR 1302 approximately 0.75 miles to SR 1301 (June Johnson Rd.).  Turn left on SR 1301 and continue approximately 1.5 miles. Follow signs to dove fields on the right.  Approximately 3 acres rye and wheat. 

Field 10 (Carrington Tract) - From Aberdeen, travel approximately 12 miles south on Hwy 15-501.  Turn left onto SR 1332 (Peach Orchard Rd.). Continue approximately 1.5 miles and follow signs to dove fields on the right. Approximately 15 acres seeded to millets, milo, and rye.

Second Creek Game Land (Permit)

Located in western Rowan County has permit dove hunting on established agricultural fields leased to local cooperators.  Crops and acreages vary yearly but include corn, soybeans (late seasons), and occasionally millet. All available agriculture fields open to dove hunting.

Gravel Pit Road – From the intersection of US Hwy 301 and NC Hwy 561 south of Halifax, take NC Hwy 561 approximately 7.5 miles southeast to Gravel Pit Road.  Turn right and travel 1.7 miles southwest to signed fields on the right side of Gravel Pit Road.  Approximately 25 acres seeded to corn, sunflowers, and grain sorghum.

Uwharrie Game Land (Non Permit)

Favor Morris #1 (SR 1154) – From Troy, travel approximately 10 miles north on Hwy 109.  Approximately 1 mile after crossing the Uwharrie River, turn left on SR 1154 and continue 1 mile.  Field on the right adjacent to road.  Approximately 3 acres seeded to millet and/or wheat.

Favor Morris #2 (SR 1154) – From Troy, travel approximately 10 miles north on Hwy 109.  Approximately 1 mile after crossing the Uwharrie River, turn left on SR 1154 and continue 1 mile.  Field is several hundred yards off road, behind the field on the road (trail on far end of first field leads to second).  Approximately 2 acres seeded to millet and/or wheat.

Intersection (SR 1154/ Forest Service Rd 544) - From Troy, travel approximately 10 miles north on Hwy 109.  Approximately 1 mile after crossing the Uwharrie River, turn left on SR 1154 and continue approximately 1.5 miles to intersection of SR 1154 & USFS Road 544.  Field on both sides of intersection.  Approximately 3 acres seeded to millet and/or wheat.    
 
Hedgerow (Forest Service Rd 544) - From Troy, travel approximately 10 miles north on Hwy 109.  Approximately 1 mile after crossing the Uwharrie River, turn left on SR 1154 and continue approximately 1.5 miles to intersection of SR 1154 & USFS Road 544.  Turn left on USFS Road 544 and continue 0.25 mile.  Field on left.  Approximately 1 acre seeded to millet and/or wheat.

Turnip Patch (Forest Service Rd 576) - From Troy, travel approximately 10 miles north on Hwy 109.  Approximately 1 mile after crossing the Uwharrie River, turn left on SR 1154 and continue approximately 1.5 miles to intersection of SR 1154 & USFS Road 544.  Turn left on USFS Road 544 and continue approximately 1 mile.  Turn right on USFS Road 576.  Field is approximately 0.5 mile on left.  Approximately 3 acres seeded to millet and/or wheat.
    
Thornburg #1 (SR 1107) – From Asheboro, travel south on Hwy 49 approximately 5 miles to the community of Mechanic.  Turn left on SR 1107 (Lassiter Mill Rd.).  Continue approximately 2 miles.  Field on left in front of old farm house.  Approximately 6 acres seeded to millet and/or wheat. 

Thornburg #2 (SR 1107) – From Asheboro, travel south on Hwy 49 approximately 5 miles to the community of Mechanic.  Turn left on SR 1107 (Lassiter Mill Rd.).  Continue approximately 2 miles.  Turn left into Thornburg Farm.  Field approximately 0.5 miles behind house.  Follow path (foot travel only behind gate).  Approximately 4 acres seeded to millet and/or wheat.

Coastal Region Dove Fields

Bladen Lakes State Forest (Non Permit)

One field located approximately 2 miles North of the Bladen Lakes State Forest Ranger Station on NC Hwy. 242.  Approximately 6 ½ acres are seeded to millet and 6 ½ acres contain mature wheat.

One field located off road that enters Game Land at Yorick on Hwy. 53. Go approximately 1.0 mile and field is on left before intersection. Approximately 3 acres are seeded in millet.

One field located inside Game Land off Hwy. 242. Turn on Johnsontown Road off of Hwy. 242. Go approximately 1.0 mile and turn left on Bill Martin Road at school. Go approximately 1 mile. Take right fork when road splits and field is approximately 1 mile on left under power line. Approximately 3 acres are seeded in millet.

Coastal Region Dove Fields

Croatan National Forest (Permit / Non Permit)

Dove hunting on the Brices Creek and Hill Field Dove Areas are by permit only the first six hunting days of the first season.

Brices Creek Dove Area (Permit) - Traveling either East from Kinston or West from Havelock on Highway 70, turn on Williams Rd. at the main intersection by the Burger King and Shell/Wendy’s in James City (following signs to the Craven Regional Airport). Follow William’s Rd. (it turns into Kelso Rd. near the airport) to the stop sign. Turn left on Madam Moore’s Lane. Travel across the Brices Creek bridge and make the next left on Perrytown Rd. (this road is immediately before Merchants Grocery). Follow Perrytown Road approximately 2 miles until you see the sign for the New Bern Wildlife Depot. Turn left onto gravel road into Croatan National Forest. Continue past the Wildlife Depot on your left and park at the next gate on the left. Approximately 40 acres are seeded to millet, and corn, in several different fields in this area.

Traveling from Jacksonville/Wilmington on Hwy 17 North, turn right on Island Creek Rd. (this road changes names several times). This is the only state road right turn out of Pollocksville. Follow Island Creek Rd. approximately 12 miles and turn right just past Merchants Grocery. Follow directions above from Merchants Grocery.

Hill Field Dove Area (Permit)- Located off NC 58 near the Haywood Landing area in Croatan National Forest. The dove hunting area is at the end of USFS 603. USFS 603 is approximately 7 miles South from Maysville or 7 miles North of Cape Carteret on NC 58. The dove area is at the end of USFS 603 past the gate. (All of the agricultural fields in this area are in the Game Lands program). Approximately 18 acres are seeded to millet.

Gull Rock Game Land (Non Permit)

From Swan Quarter travel East on US 264 in Hyde County for approximately 5 miles. Turn right on Juniper Bay Rd., which is just beyond Mattamuskeet High School. Go 1 mile and turn left on the first paved road which is Hydeland Road. Go approx. 0.3 miles. 2 fields are located on the right side of Hydeland Road and 1 field is located on the left of Hydeland Road. 10 acres are seeded in Sunflower and Millet.

Holly Shelter Game Land (Non Permit)

West Side

Field 1 - Located off of Shaw Highway Road at WRC boat ramp. Approximately 3 acres are seeded in millet. Exceptionally dry weather delayed germination of this planting. The best opportunity may be the second week.

Field 2 - Located across from Wildlife Depot on Shaw Highway.(Old Landing Strip) Approximately 4 acres seeded in millet. This area is alongside of Shaw Highway.

Field 3 – Located approximately I mile inside west gate on both sides of Lodge Road, seeded to 2 acres of millet.

East Side

Field 1 - Located on B.J. Road. Field is seeded to 7 acres of millet.

Field 2 - Located on Lodge Road, between Tram Road and BJ Road on left behind orange gate. Field is seeded to 3 acres of millet.

Field 3 - Located near the first intersection of Tram and Lodge Roads on left behind orange gate. Field is seeded to 3 acres of millet

Coastal Region Dove Fields

J. Morgan Futch Game Land (Permit Only)

From Columbia take Highway 64 East approximately 8 miles. J. Morgan Futch Game Land is on right side of Highway 64. There are 2 parking areas located just off Highway 64. Area is comprised of 600 acres of impounded fields and some woodland. The fields are contract farmed and managed primarily for waterfowl use. Crops include corn and soybeans. Corn is normally harvested by dove season however this may not always be the case. The hunt dates for dove are September 1, 3, 4, and 5. A special permit is required and the use of non-toxic shot is required for this area..

From Creswell take SR 1158. Turn right on SR 1105 (Cross Landing Road). Go approximately 5 miles. Turn right on Phelps Road. Go approximately 2 miles and turn left into second parking area on Game Lands. Fields are through gate on right. Approximately 40 acres are seeded in millet.

Roanoke River Wetlands and Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge (Permit Only)

Conoho Farms Tract Fields are located off NC 125 between Williamston and Hamilton. Approximately 6 miles north of Williamston. Fields are on right side of Hwy. 125. Two parking areas are located on site. One on Hwy. 125 and another located past Wildlife Depot in back of farm. Stone’s Creek Game Land (Non Permit)

Folkstone Tract Fields are located east of US Hwy. 17 at Holly Ridge.  Take Sound Road approximately 3.5 miles to Dolf Everett Road and turn left.  Fields are located 1/2 mile on left and seeded to 9 acres of millet.

Suggs Mill Pond Game Land (Permit Only)

Field 1 - Located approximately 3.5 miles north of White Oak on Gum Springs Road. Turn left on SR 1327 (Live Oak Methodist Church Road). Go approximately 1 mile and take the second dirt road on the right, which has a Wildlife Management Area sign at entrance. Go approximately 1 mile and field is located on left on both sides of Wildlife Depot.  Approximately 15 acres are seeded to millet.

Field 2 - Located to the left off entrance road approximately .5 miles before Wildlife Depot.  Cross hunter foot bridge and walk about 200 yards to field.  Field seeded to approximately 5 acres of millet. 

Field 3 - Located approximately 4 miles down Live Oak Methodist Church Road past Suggs Mill Pond entrance.  Look for dove field sign identifying field on the right.  Field is seeded to approximately 5 acres of millet. 

Field 4 - Located off Walter West Road off of Hwy. 1002.  From Hwy. 242 at Ammon, turn on Hwy 1002 (Old Fayetteville Road) and go west about 4.5 miles.  Turn left on Walter West road, a state maintained dirt road.  Go to the end of road.  You’ll see an orange gate.  Just past the gate on the right is the dove fields seeded to approximately 20 acres of millet.

White Oak River Game Lands (Permit / Non Permit)

Dove hunting on the Huggins Tract is by permit only.
A Hunting Opportunity Permit is needed to access Hargett Avenue

Huggins Tract Fields are located off Belgrade-Swansboro Road between Swansboro and Maysville. Fields are accessed from Hargett Avenue, one mile from Belgrade-Swansboro Road, behind an orange gate and on the right seeded to 17 acres of millet.
